Renewal Timeline

The key is to plan ahead: start early, complete your CCEs and mentor coaching, and submit your application well before your deadline.

Frequently asked questions

When renewing your ICF ACC credential, it’s normal to have questions about requirements, costs, timelines, and what happens if your credential lapses. Below you’ll find answers to the most common questions to make your renewal journey smoother.

You can earn your Continuing Coach Education (CCE) credits through:

  • Mentor Coaching: Up to 10 hours of mentor coaching (giving or receiving) can count toward your renewal. These must be in addition to any mentor coaching done for your initial credential.

  • Core Competencies: At least 24 CCEs, with 3 focused on ICF Coaching Ethics. The Ethics requirement can be met through ICF’s free online Ethics course.

  • Resource Development: The remaining 16 CCEs may be in Resource Development or Core Competencies.

  • ICF-accredited programs and webinars: Training providers often offer eligible CCEs.

ICF Continuing Professional Development: Explore ICF’s own resources for additional opportunities.

If you do not meet the renewal requirements by your expiration date, your credential will lapse after a two-month grace period. Once lapsed, you must stop using ICF credential logos and marks. To reinstate your credential, you must follow the renewal process for lapsed credentials, which may require extra CCEs and fees.

The ICF allows a two-month (60 days) grace period after your expiration date. During this time, your credential remains active, and you can still submit your renewal without penalty. If you miss this window, your credential lapses, though you still have up to 10 months to renew, provided you earn additional CCEs for each month beyond the grace period.

If your credential has lapsed, you have 12 months to renew it.

  • In the first 2 months, you still need the standard 40 CCEs.

  • From the 3rd month onward, the required CCEs increase incrementally, up to 52 CCEs (with 31.2 in Core Competencies) by month 12.
If more than a year has passed since expiration, you cannot renew—you must submit a new credential application.

If your credential expired more than 12 months ago, it is considered fully expired. You must apply again for a new credential (or for the next credential level) rather than submitting a renewal.

The renewal fee depends on your membership status:

  • $175 USD for ICF Members

  • $275 USD for Non-Members

This fee covers the administrative costs of processing your application and is paid directly to ICF when you submit your renewal.

Yes. The entire renewal process is online. Log in to your ICF profile, access the “Credential Renewal Application,” enter your CCEs, and complete payment.

No, membership is not required. However, it comes with benefits: discounted renewal fees, access to free CCEs, and opportunities for networking and peer coaching.

Mentor coaching involves 10 hours over a minimum of three months, focused on strengthening your coaching skills. These hours must be completed within three years of your initial credential or last renewal.

To qualify, your mentor coach must hold at least a PCC or MCC credential, or an ACC that has been re-certified at least once. You can:

  • Use the official ICF Mentor Coach Registry

  • Reach out to your local ICF Chapter or coaching community

  • Ask colleagues or trusted coaches for referrals

When choosing a mentor coach, consider their style, expertise, and availability to ensure alignment with your goals.

If you’d like to partner with us for mentor coaching and fulfill your renewal requirements, Coaching Outside The Box offers accredited options to support your growth.
