I had the opportunity to reflect on this picture just now during a session with a supervisee.
When it comes to depth in conversations and in relationships, the metaphor of the iceberg resonates so much with me.
If we ask questions that stay above water, it is very unlikely that we will spark transformation in those we coach.
However, some people are just not ready to go deep. Or they do not want to.
And when it comes to groups and teams this is even more complex: lack of safety, fears, low group emotional intelligence, focus on tasks might get in the way of doing deep work.
The interesting reflection from today’s session was about whether it is appropriate to challenge our clients to go deeper.
Are they aware they are staying above water?
What does the group want or need?
It could be very interesting to explore the metaphor of the iceberg with them…
